Helena watched from the shadows, from behind a bookcase as her fiancée scraped flecks from the painting on the wall, into the drink in his hand.
She’d always hated that piece of art, the horned beast staring out from canvas. Now, she understood. She saw how much stronger the man she loved was becoming.
She emerged from the shadows.
At the sight of her, his mouth dropped open. “H-h-honey, hi. I swear I was going to tell you. I just hadn’t gotten around to it.”
He was right about that. He was going to tell her everything. And then she’d take the power for herself.
